What goes wrong is almost never the installation itself — it is something that was on the machine and is now gone, or a licence nobody checked, or a Wi-Fi driver that was not available afterwards. These are three different jobs and people use the words interchangeably. A reset reinstalls Windows from files already on the machine and can keep your personal files; it is the fastest option and will not fix a corrupted partition or a drive-level fault. A fresh installation writes Windows from installation media over the existing one, clearing the system rot a reset leaves behind. A format and clean install wipes and re-partitions the system drive first — the most thorough, and the one that most needs a proper backup beforehand. Which one your machine needs is part of the diagnosis, and we tell you before doing it.
Whether a machine can take Windows 11 depends on its hardware, not on preference — the processor generation, TPM and secure boot all matter. We check that before proposing an upgrade rather than after, because a machine that cannot meet the requirements is better served by a clean Windows 10 install than by a workaround that stops receiving updates.
A clean installation clears the system drive. The three folders people forget are Desktop, Downloads and Documents, because they do not think of them as folders. Browser bookmarks and saved passwords survive only if the browser was signed in and syncing — worth checking before, not after.
If the drive is encrypted — and many machines are, sometimes without the owner realising — the recovery key must be in hand before anything is formatted or moved. Without that key the data on it is not recoverable by anyone, including us. This is the single most common way people lose files during an otherwise routine reinstall, and it is completely avoidable by checking first.
A digital licence tied to the machine's hardware usually reactivates by itself after a reinstall. A licence tied to a Microsoft account needs those sign-in details available on the day. If a machine has no valid licence, we will tell you what a genuine one costs and install it once you approve — licensed software is charged separately from the work.

An installation is not finished when Windows boots. Network, graphics, chipset, audio and touchpad drivers all need to be right, and on older or less common models availability is worth confirming beforehand — a machine left without a working Wi-Fi driver cannot download its own Wi-Fi driver.
We check the drive before reinstalling, because it changes the recommendation. Writing a fresh Windows onto a failing disk buys days, not months, and we would rather tell you that than take payment for a fix that will not hold. If a drive needs replacing, that is quoted as parts and you decide.

A Windows licence, a replacement drive, or any other hardware is charged separately at the price quoted to you. Recovering data from a drive that has already failed is not part of this service — it is workshop work, quoted case by case, and its outcome depends on the condition of the device.
