The visit starts the same way regardless of the machine: find the fault before proposing a fix. That means checking whether the problem is hardware or software before anything is replaced — a laptop that will not start and a desktop that will not start often have entirely different causes, and neither is diagnosed by guessing.
No power at all, power but a black screen, a machine that reaches the logo and restarts, a blue screen on every boot, or one that shuts itself down after a few minutes. These look alike from the outside and are very different underneath — power delivery, storage, memory, thermals or a corrupted Windows install.
Slowness is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can be a failing drive, too little memory for how the machine is now used, thermal throttling from dust, software loading at startup, or an operating system that needs reinstalling. The point of the diagnosis is telling you which one it is, including when the honest answer is that the machine is near the end of its useful life.
Drive health is checked as part of most diagnoses, because it changes the advice. Moving from a hard disk to an SSD is the single biggest improvement available to an older but otherwise sound machine. If a drive is already failing, we say that plainly — and we will not write a fresh installation onto a dying disk and call it fixed.
Anything that clears a drive is discussed with you first, and a straightforward copy of your files can usually be made during the visit. This is ordinary backup and migration — copying what is readable. It is not the same as recovering data from a drive that has already failed, which is workshop work, quoted separately, and never guaranteed.
